Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Policy

Policy Statement

Women's Fund for Nature is committed to promoting equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) in all areas of our work. We aim to ensure that no one is treated less favourably because of a protected characteristic, and we actively work to eliminate discrimination and foster inclusion. This policy reflects our legal obligations under the Equality Act 2010 and our commitment to best practice in the voluntary sector.

Legal Framework

This policy is underpinned by the Equality Act 2010, which protects individuals from discrimination based on the following protected characteristics:

  • Age

  • Disability

  • Gender reassignment

  • Marriage and civil partnership

  • Pregnancy and maternity

  • Race

  • Religion or belief

  • Sex

  • Sexual orientation

Charities must comply with the Act if they:

  • Employ staff

  • Engage volunteers

  • Provide services to the public

  • Operate as associations with more than 25 members

  • Carry out public functions (e.g. under contract with a public authority)

Even though volunteers are not legally classified as employees, the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) recommends treating them fairly and inclusively. Discrimination against volunteers may still be challenged under service provision rules or reputational grounds.
